A hearty meal at Fo You Yuan!

It was a quiet weekday and we congregated here for dinner as this place is one of our favourites for wholesome and delicious vegetarian cuisine!

For starters, FYY served up:
1) Crispy "Ikan Bilis" made of seaweed and beancurd skin
2) Fresh homemade achar

They were gone in minutes and we asked for more crispy things to go with the Olive Fried Rice (below):
Damn shiok combi I tell you.
And that chili paste.. it burns so good!

A close up of the fragrant dish, where you can taste fresh olive bits in each bite:

If you haven't had vegetarian escargots, you HAVE to come to FYY for their darn awesome ones:
Who knew gooey mozzarella cheese and mushrooms in a pot full of holes could taste so good?

All 12 of them in their crowning glory:

Chiong ah!!!
The cheese were shred to bits and nothing was left in the pot...

Up next, we had the Shou Mian:
Wet, juicy and full of wok hei.
Chef, you good.

Hotplate Tofu:
Also wet, juicy and full of wok hei.
CHEF, HOW YOU DO IT???

Then we had a vegetable dish with fried beancurd skin, soaked in an aromatic sauce:
The chai xim was delicious and fresh, with the buds still intact, just the way I like it! The beancurd skin... it was surprisingly flavourful and fried very well mmmm.

Here's a sudden picture of our dishes:

Now you see the mango "fish" dish:
This was a good attempt with fried beancurd and seaweed rolled into one, giving a "fishy" flavour. I didn't fancy the sauce as I thought it was too heavy for the dish; otherwise yummy.

And the "Golden Duck Slices" next to it:
Like the fish, this dish is also made of fried beancurd skin though sans seaweed. We loved it as it was fried nicely, and accompanied by a sweet duck sauce.

Despite ordering so many dishes, we did not feel stuffed and really enjoyed ourselves.
It might be pyschological, but the fact that we were only eating all vegetarian food cooked with fresh oil helped a lot in easing our guilt, if any ;p

We apologise for the lack of prices but that's cos our boss, J, always places the orders for us so there is almost no reference to the menu haha! ;)

But the average price range would be around $20-30 per pax, if you order like this post.

Do head down soon and remember to make reservations if you are going down on the 1st or 15th of the Chinese lunar calendar!

Trust me, you won't vegan in vain.
Vegan on, weelovefood.

Mixed feelings about CUT by Wolfgang Puck

After hearing all the rad reviews about this place, we decided we had to come and try for ourselves. Stepping in, we were greeted by friendly staff but I did not feel much enthusiasm from them. Quite.. robotic and simply doing their job if you get what I mean. Laoniang got foodblog one ok?!! Pfffft. (hahaha)

So, despite the fancy place, with most of the food being impeccable, a good ambience, I didn't fancy the place very much. It simply felt it was lacking human warmth and passion.
I'm a huge sucker for good service.... then good food.
Lucky I had my favourite person around for company ;)

All the negativity aside, food pic time!

For starters, we had the Bone Marrow Flan:

A delicious pudding that had the subtle fragrance of meat, encased neatly in the bone.

It was quite fun to pick it out and then spreading our "jam" on the buttery brioche bread:

We also tried the shaved truffle pasta but it was a far cry from the heavenly creation of Casa Tartufo so we were quite disappointed as it was simply bland and boring.
Well, they were generous enough with the black winter truffle.... :

Lucky the meat lived up to its name:

We ordered a 250g piece of US Wagyu Ribeye to share and it was pure carnivorous delight as we sank our jowls into a juicy centre and nicely cooked sides. The meat was flavourful on its own, hardly needing any extra sauces or salt, and we were pretty satisfied even after sharing.
The sides of Sauteed Wild Mushrooms and Potato Puree were equally good. The shrooms were very flavourful and juicy with a buttery aftertaste whereas the mash was soft, grainy with a taste of milk powder.
(It got a bit gelat after a while, however.)

Also got a glass of red wine to pair the meat with:
It was a good fruity one, though I can't remember the name of it.
(Please refer to receipt picture)

At the end of the meal, we had a nice touch on the dessert, sending a smile to our faces:

Our bill for those interested to go:

Got a cute complimentary "X'mas tree" that was basically a stack of chocolate coated custard puffs, stacked together using glaze haha!

Free cookies by the restaurant:

To sum things up, I would say that CUT is over-hyped and that is probably why both of us felt let down at the whole experience. It could also be a culmination of factors, such as ordering the pasta (hate wasting calories on bad food!!), the X'mas crowd, hectic pace at MBS etc. And not say very cheap some more.
I guess some things are just not meant to be *emo face*
So, I doubt we'll be back anytime soon as I think there are more steakhouses out there that offer better value for money.
(For the same price, I would very much prefer Skirt at Sentosa Cove if you ask me!)

For now, bye bye puck.

BKK 23rd-26th Nov! (Day 3)

Day 3  Itinerary:

1) First pit stop for the day:
We were supposed to try Kaiton Kao Mun chicken rice, where all the staff are donned in pink, so it is the "Pink Shirt" stall. But we ended up having Kwang Heng Pratunam chicken rice aka the "Green Shirt" chicken rice as both stalls were just next to each other.
The stalls are located just opposite Platinum mall, next to the overhead bridge.
To be more exact, it is on the corner of Petchburi Soi 30, Petchburi Rd, but I doubt you'll miss it!

Our white chicken with clear soup:

Overall we didn't find the chicken rice fantastic, as we were used to the richer flavours of Singapore's style. The sauce was delicious enough for an otherwise bland chicken rice.

2) Damn shiok massage at Ruen Nuad parlour:
(42 Convent Rd, SilomBangkok)

Each of us paid about $30 SGD for a 2 hours full body massage. It was simply heavenly as we were well pampered by seasoned masseurs in a serene surrounding (which was: soft, tranquil music with gentle breezes and wavy trees in the background...)

Having our feet soaked before being ushered in; we were all looking forward to a much needed session since we've been walking (& eating) so much in the trip!

And we bought some street food along the way:

I just love this coconut cream biscuit snack as it was wafer thin with a rich fragrance.
If anyone knows its name please enlighten me!!

3) World No 5. Pad Thai at Thong Lo BTS:
We were on the way to a coffee joint called Roast at Sukhumvit when a sharp pair of foodie eyes spotted This Stall. (I think it was Mr Wee) We believe it was the one we went gaga over at the World Street Food Congress festival and boy, were we glad to be able to taste it right there!

"Eh gin leh, ai jiak simi???"

     Shiokness on a plate...

Group verdict?
It lives up to its name indeed, with a crispy perimeter surrounding a juicy mess of fresh & sweet seafood! The best thing? The Orh (oysters) inside were not a wee bit fishy, yummmm.
A good contender for the missing orh jian from Platinum mall.

So good we had a second helping.

4) Roast Cafe at Sukhumvit
251/1, Sukhumvit 55 Road (Thong Lor), 2nd Floor:
This was recommended by M & L as they came here before and said the coffee beans were good stuff. But how to not have desserts with coffee, right?

Right?
So.... we had:

Warm Valrhona Chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream:

French toast with jam & ice cream:

Some banana mish mash that we forgot the name of:

Chocolate soufflé:

Me thinks the desserts were pretty average but luckily the coffee trumped everything else.
(Can't go wrong with people like M&L!)

Just check them caffe lattes out:

Thick and foamy, with a richness that stays in your throat... it was a really enjoyable cuppa!

6) Despite all of us saying that we were stuffed, we ended up having a full meal over at the infamous food Stretch in between Central World & Platinum malls. You know that long stretch of food stalls leading toward Central world when you turn right at Novotel? Won't miss it. So we left the ordering to L, who really made sure we were welllllll fat. I mean, fed.

Thickass pork strips:

Just look at the fatty cross section: foodie heaven, cardiac hell.

Some greens to balance the meat:
Som Tam (green papaya salad), lesser spice.

 ALL TIME FAVE KANGKONG.
This was extremely juicy and tasty... gone within minutes!

What's Thailand without Tom Yum Goong?

Basil minced pork:

Best omelette of our lives:
How do Thais make their eggs so crispy on the outside yet still so juicy everywhere????

Food galore:
Chiong ah!!!

7) Banana prata along Pantip Plaza.
E said they found a good prata but we didn't see it at midnight. I mean, not everyone comes out eating prata like us past 12am.... but we did see this man selling pratas so we decided to support him.

All excited except J.
He's like: "I think B can make this better lor...... " haha!

 M.I.A. : Man In Action:

Finally, our glorious glistening (read: MARGARINE loaded)-chocolate-condensed-milk drenched banana prata:

Decent but not the best we've tried. And the original one E & S had was better.
So if you see a prata stall outside Pantip Plaza, remember to try it!!

8) Last stop: Their local Mac's Shogun Pork Burger. At 12 midnight. Sighhhh.
But as E aptly put it, "In Bangkok, just eat!!"
The ladies: "Yar right... eat now regret forever!"
That said, it was indeed a juicy and soft bun. Since Singapore doesn't have, why not? Haha!

Very happy boys.

It was a good way to end the day nonetheless. Then we hit the sacks with bursting tummies, all ready for the last day in BKK...

Stay tuned!
