BKK 23rd-26th Nov! (Day 2)

Day 2 Itinerary -

1) Pratunam 42/43 Petchburi Soi 19 Wanton Mee:

Early morning wake up, first thing must eat wanton mee.
We've heard soooo much about it and even a Singaporean-Thai friend of mine recommended it!

Waiting to enter the restaurant - yes it is making that much money:

A pot of dubious meat:

He looks suspiciously non Thai.... :

And for future foodies:

Finally time to see 'em noodles!
Just check the noodles out &  the accompanying garnishes:

Yummmmmmmmmmmmm.

Indeed, these lengendary noodles were amazing.
In each bowl was a fist-sized portion of very springy noodles that are a bit thicker than Singapore's version. It was very shiok to eat as we added chili spice & sugar (apparently local Thai style, correct me if I'm wrong) to the slightly oily noodles, making it very flavourful!
The occasional bits of fresh, crispy pork lard coupled with a fragrant char siew made the dish complete.

Most of us had 2 portions, some of us more ....
(P.s.The woman's face.... epic!)

We also ordered a side of pork offal, which was very tasty & soft but I found the pork taste a tad too overpowering:

2) Chatuchak Market Pork Bun:
(Aka hidden gem of chatuchak)
This was recommended by M & L, whom led us to a secluded corner inside the popular market, right next to a pharmacy.

We were very surprised to see a bustling stall filled with thick slabs of aromatic marinated meat that were arranged in layers after another.

Really see already also shiok!!
It's like a Thai version of our kong ba bao, except it was juicier and a lot more tasty due to the marinate and special ginger-based chili. Matching the robust flavours was a fluffy & soft bun, and that really tempted us to go for one more bun each despite our protesting stomachs!

Soft fluffiness.....:

Finding more food around the area:

And spotted our favourite marinated meat:

Just whack only!!!

3) Salted egg & shrimp Salad from Platinum mall food court during mid afternoon:

We initially wanted to have our favourite Orh-jian (aka Oyster omelette) but the popular stall was not around :'( If anyone has any idea about what happened to it, please comment! So bo bian lor, we opted for the new salad stall located at the right side of the food court. Luckily it turned out quite tasty & we were pretty pleased.

4) A&W snack from Pratnip Plaza nearing evening time:

Come to Bangkok, must eat A&W also since Singapore's outlets disappeared :'( We were literally bursting but because YOLO... just eat lah! We showed some restraint and only ordered the ice cream & waffle set, not knowing it came with curly fries & root beer float.

That's it. K.O-ed on the spot.
Haha t'was decent but once we had our greedy cravings satisfied, we stopped munching as there was still dinner awaiting us. (Oh boy......)
Walk straight down the streets outside Platinum and you will find A&W just after an overhead bridge if you are a fan!

5) Talad Rot Fai Street food at night:

We headed down to do some shopping as this market was known for its quirky mix of goods, ranging from vintage tees (we definitely made the shop owner at one of the shops very happy!!) to furniture and custom made items. I had my named carved out on a mini piece of dusty gold bar, which is now hanging off one of my travelling bags, and I LOVE IT !

Besides shopping, we also grabbed some bites to share.... and over-ordered as usual. Some things just don't change.

First kill from the square:
Bacon wrapped enoki mushrooms vs pork neck salad

Both were superb but the salad was so spicy that we kept having to blow our noses urgh!! Sigh, what to do, a foodie's gotta do what a foodie's gotta do.

The array of food, featuring (clockwise from the Cokes):
1) Pad thai (us human piggies were awaiting 2 more plates when this was taken) - yummy with a slight "wokhei"!
2) Fried calamari - forget about ordering as they were too floury and not very tasty
3) Fried rice with egg - tasty & fragrant
4) Crispy wanton skins that were super shiok and we ordered 2 more immediately haha!
5) 2 eggs in 1 - a dish that had a normal egg wrapped around a century egg, in a very spicy yet irresistable sauce!

After an immensely satisfying time at the market, we headed back to a massage parlour behind Glow Hotel and it was aptly named No.1 as the massuers were damn zai!

After that, it was truly k.o. time for us all......
(Need to recharge for the next day's food you know!!!)
******

That's all peeps. Stay tuned for days 3 & 4!

BKK 23rd-26th Nov 13! (Day 1)

*** Warning: Not for those on diets ***

Decided to do a post on BKK as the trip was filled with so much good food and places, literally from the moment we landed! Too shiok not to share.
Plus, I'm sure many Singaporeans conduct a "yearly pilgrimage" there, given the affordability & accessibility of the place, so this post should resonate or be useful to you ;)

Night 1 -

Soul Food restaurant at Sukhumvit Soi 55:

We had a late touch down and were starving for a few solid hours already.
So just imagine our hunger when we got to the place around 10pm (local time) but....
 it was fully packed.

Us then: "Wah seh must be damn good!!"

Also, I'm serious when I say that our stomachs felt the disappointment worst, and they growled even louder then. Thank goodness the waitress told us a long table was available and we stepped in very fast. Upon grabbing the menus, it was an ordering frenzy as we gave in to our noisy and empty stomachs. The place has a nice ambience and serves food tapas style in sizeable portions, much to our greedy delight.

Pretty table glasses:

Dishes ordered:

Pork & beef strips (200Thb) -

Thick strips of chunky marinated meat, served with a good Thai sauce on the side. A tad dry and salty though. Would go well with some Singha beer, but we had some cocktails instead. Which weren't very memorable save for their funky names (I had one named Bangkok Bastard and it really tasted like one - left a bad after taste) and one named "Jai Yen Yen" that was very refreshing.

The menu for your amusement:

Crab fried rice (275Thb) -
(Sadly, no photo was taken.....)
Fragrant, full of chunky crab meat and very shiok as the rice grains were fluffy and not wet. Just my kind of yum. A good dish for rice lovers!

Fried chicken  (200Thb) -
This was served with pickled watermelon rinds on the side which we found more tasty than the fried chicken itself haha! So you can probably give this a miss.

Still fun to take up close pictures of them meat!

Samosa (180Thb) -

One of the best fried triangles I've tried... these were filled with aromatic minced chicken and provided a satisfying crunch with each bite!

 Chicken Wings (200Thb) -

Juicy & fat, these wings were a huge crowd pleaser. The green Thai chili sauce that came along also added an extra kick to them.

Grilled fish with lemon grass in banana leaf (240Thb) -

I didn't fancy this style as it was too bland for me, though the faint aftertaste of lemongrass was very pleasing.

Satay Grilled prawn (250Thb) -

I was assailed by the sweetness of the prawn and being a seafood fan, I had another piece since the slightly charred taste was a good complement to the fresh meat.

 Pork Neck Salad (240Thb) -

We all loved the meat as it was thick, tender and simply tasty as it absorbed the juices from the salad very well. Very flavourful and spicy indeed!
And of course, this dish was wiped clean.

Pork belly curry (240Thb) -

LOVED THIS. Imagine sinking your jowls into soft Chinese style fatty three-layered pork immersed in a Thai style brown sauce... ma ma mia. It must be hard being the last piece, since all eyes were on it haha!

   Pork ribs (275Thb) -

This is like a cousin of the above dish, just less fatty and more firm. Would be good if if there wasn't pork belly to steal its limelight.

Mango sticky rice (175Thb) -

Sweet mango coupled with fragrant milky rice... nothing to complain about!

Coconut ice cream (80Thb) -
(This was gone too fast for a picture, not kidding you!)
While the mango sticky rice was good, this was mind blowing. If you have followed my last post on Casa Tartufo, you will know how I described its heavenly Truffle ice cream... and I find this a worthy contender. The rich aroma of coconut wafted into my nostrils before I tasted it, and the result was a creamy texture with a lovely blend of chocolate chips ( !!!!) and coconut bits.
Simply unforgettable... MUST ORDER.

Soul Food did not disappoint and we were all extremely satisfied with M's recommendation ( our unofficial tour guide for the trip, thank you for all the work!).

Ps. Soul Food is also on Trip Advisor and has many high ratings ♡

We wanted to do a massage after that but it was close to 1am already so there were no shops open. Hence, we retired to our hotels, dreaming of Soi 19's wanton mee waiting for us the next day....

And folks, I shall end off here for now; or else I think I might run out of server space or that your computer will die while loading the post.

Hope you enjoyed this post and we will get the other parts up very soon!

BKK 23rd-26th Nov! (Day 4)

FINALLY.
The last of them all.
Sorry it took me a while but I kind of forgot about BKK part IV cos it is quite a short post, consisting of:

1) Mee pok hidden away in one of Pratunam's many alleys, but this is quite easy to find. It is the first alley next to Soi 19 famous wanton mee (refer to Day 2).

And I swear anything the Thais cook up is magical... and probably because they use MSG like it's end of the world as well haha! This simple dish was very savoury, with bouncy balls and noodles that hid many pieces of pork lard. So delightful for the mouth!

2) And we did a very Singaporean thing.
Eating KFC in a foreign land as our last meal. You know how some people make it a point to try Mac or Kfc where ever they travel to? Something like that.
But we were definitely more greedy than hungry. Or curious.

Still, no regrets eating this just a few hours after our "mee pok"s. The chicken tasted fresh with a wicked crispy skin... must be another of those "the grass is greener on the other side" symptoms.

With this, I conclude BKK'14 and I hope you guys enjoyed reading about our foodie explorations!

Now, time to start on all those backlogs of good food...

Xxx,
